Military Underwear: What to Wear Under Your Uniform

Military underwear is the base layer that determines whether you stay dry and comfortable under your uniform on a long outing, guard duty or march. It has to wick away sweat, avoid chafing under body armor and a backpack, and withstand frequent washing in field conditions. Tactical underwear differs from regular underwear in its cut for active movement, reinforced zones and colors that do not stand out under the uniform. Start your choice with the season and the type of workload: standing guard in the cold and active outings call for different items.

Thermal Underwear

Thermal underwear for military is the foundation of a cold-weather kit. Models made of classic fleece keep you warmest and suit long periods in the cold with little activity. Honeycomb fleece mesh and waffle-structure fabric let moisture pass better, so they work well when you are on the move, while microfleece is thinner and sits comfortably under snug uniform. Compression sets fit tightly against the body and suit those who move a lot. Pay attention to flatlock seams and the gusset in the crotch area: they reduce chafing and the risk of tearing when squatting.

Tactical Socks

Socks determine the condition of your feet in boots, so tactical socks should be chosen for the season. Summer models made of CoolMax or cotton with polyamide dry faster and have ventilation zones, while winter ones made of wool or merino hold heat longer. Neoprene thermal socks come in handy where your feet are constantly in water or mud. Useful details include a reinforced heel and toe, an arch support band and a seam that is barely noticeable and does not press inside the footwear. Low no-show socks are convenient with sneakers; for combat boots choose high ones.

Underpants

Tactical underpants and boxers are often bought last, although they are the first thing to chafe on a long march. Cotton boxers feel pleasant against the skin and work well for wearing at the base. Models made of nylon with elastane fit snugly, do not bunch up when you move and dry quickly after washing, so they are more practical in the field. Options with symbols, such as Ukrainian Armed Forces underwear with an emblem, also make a good gift.

How to Choose

Check the size against the manufacturer's chart: thermal underwear works only when it fits tightly against the body, and an oversized sock bunches into folds and causes chafing. Sock sizes are usually given as a range, so go by your shoe size. Choose the color to match your uniform: olive, coyote, multicam or black. Have at least two changes of underwear and several pairs of socks so one set can dry while you wear the other.
