Tactical Sweater: How to Choose a Warm Layer for Your Uniform

A tactical sweater is an insulating layer worn under a jacket or plate carrier, or on its own in cool weather. It differs from a sports one by a cut designed for active movement, pockets that are easy to reach while wearing gear, and hook-and-loop panels for patches. A good military sweater does not bunch up under body armor and does not restrict raising your arms. Start your choice with how you will wear it: as a standalone outer layer or as a mid-layer between base layer and jacket.

Fleece Sweaters

Tactical fleece jackets are lightweight, dry quickly, keep you warm even when slightly damp, and need no complicated care. Classic fleece is warmer and denser, microfleece is thinner and more comfortable under a jacket, and honeycomb mesh fleece releases excess heat during movement. Hybrids with softshell inserts and models with a membrane hold up better against wind, so they can be worn instead of a light jacket. Pay attention to reinforcements on the shoulders and elbows, a stand-up collar and a hood: under a helmet it is more comfortable without one. A Ukrainian Armed Forces sweater in olive, coyote, multicam or pixel pairs easily with a uniform, while black and blue models suit the police and the State Emergency Service.

Turtlenecks and Sweaters

A turtleneck fits close to the body and has a high neckline, so it is worn under a fleece sweater or on its own. Brushed cotton is soft and warm but takes longer to dry, while microdiving and stretch-cooler fabrics are elastic and wick moisture away faster. A knitted tactical sweater with shoulder and elbow patches is appropriate at the base and for everyday wear, and a wool military sweater keeps warmth well. How to Choose

Determine your size taking all layers into account: a turtleneck should fit snugly, while a sweater should sit looser but not balloon under a plate carrier. Size charts come in letter and numeric formats, so compare your measurements with the table. Wash fleece without fabric softener and do not dry it on a radiator, otherwise the pile will pill.
