Thigh holster: who finds it more convenient than a belt holster

A drop-leg holster keeps the pistol below the waist, so it does not interfere with body armor, a plate carrier or a belt-mounted rig. This kind of holster is chosen by those who wear gear on the torso, ride in vehicles or want to free up the belt for pouches. A thigh holster is designed for open carry: the weapon is visible, but the hand reaches the grip with a natural motion. If you need a belt or shoulder holster instead, see all holsters for firearms.

Which mounting to choose: hook-and-loop, quick-release buckle or MOLLE

The simplest option is a soft platform with a wide hook-and-loop strap. It is easy to adjust to your thigh circumference and quick to tighten, and the wide strap distributes weight better. The downside is that the hook-and-loop fastener gets clogged with lint over time and weakens, and it comes off with a characteristic noise.

A thigh holster with a quick-release buckle comes off with a single press of the buckle, with no need to undress. This is handy if you often get into a car or take off your gear when resting.

A set on a MOLLE platform is a holster and pouches attached to a single base. They can be rearranged or replaced, so the platform adapts to the task. This design is heavier, so the thigh strap must sit especially snug.

Universal model or for a specific pistol

A universal holster is adjusted with hook-and-loop straps and fits different pistols, but the fit in it is less precise. Before heading out, be sure to check that the weapon does not fall out when running or bending. For the 1000D Cordura model, the description names the PM (Makarov) and Fort pistols directly.

If the name includes the word "right-handed", the holster is designed for the right hand. Left-handed shooters should take this into account before ordering.

Magazine pouch and proper fit

A drop-leg holster with a magazine pouch, like those from MIL-TEC and MFH, keeps a spare magazine close to the weapon. Sets with two pouches are convenient when the belt is already occupied. Remember that every additional magazine pulls the platform down.

Attach the upper strap to the waist belt, and position the grip at the level of your lowered hand. Tighten the thigh strap so that the platform does not flap around but also does not constrict the leg when squatting. The most common mistake is hanging the holster too low: then it hits the knee and gets in the way when running.
