Waist Holster: How to Choose a Belt Model

A belt holster keeps your pistol right at hand: you don't have to dig for it in a bag or pocket, and your hips stay free. This option is chosen for everyday carry on a regular belt, for duty use with a tactical belt, for the shooting range or for hunting. Prices range from 400 to 1 330 UAH, and the main difference between models lies in the material and the way the firearm is retained.

Fabric, Plastic or Leather: Which to Choose?

A fabric holster made of Cordura is light and soft, and it can be washed after field trips. Models with a magazine pouch combine the holster and a spare magazine in one product and have an adjustable size. The downside of soft fabric is that it holds its shape less well: re-holstering the pistol with one hand is harder. A version with a flap and a metal clip protects the firearm better from dust and from falling out, but the flap adds one more movement when drawing.

A plastic waist holster is rigid and does not deform, so the pistol goes in and comes out the same way every time. The description of the quick-release models lists an adjustable cant angle, and the holster itself is easy to remove from the belt or tactical belt. The flip side is rigidity: under clothing it is more noticeable than a fabric one.

Leather is a classic holster material. The leather holster for the PM pistol has a magazine pocket. Over time leather conforms to the shape of the pistol, but it does not like prolonged soaking and needs care.

What to Check Once the Holster Is on the Belt

Even a good belt holster sags and wobbles if the belt is thin and soft. For everyday carry, take a stiff belt or a tactical belt that does not bend under the weight of the firearm. On the plastic models, set the cant angle so that your hand lands on the grip naturally both standing and sitting.

A universal holster is designed for different pistols, so it fits less precisely than one made for a specific model. Insert the firearm, tilt the holster and shake it lightly: the pistol should not fall out or visibly rattle around. The trigger guard must be fully covered by the holster wall — this is the main condition for safe carry.

If thigh or shoulder carry suits you better, see all holsters for firearms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a universal holster fit my pistol?

According to the descriptions, the universal models fit most common pistols. However, "universal" does not mean a precise fit, so after purchase check the retention and the trigger guard coverage. For the PM pistol, it is safer to take a leather model made specifically for it.

How do I care for a fabric holster?

Cordura fabric models can be washed when they get dirty. Before carrying a firearm in it, let the holster dry completely so that moisture does not get onto the metal.
