Pixel MM-14 cap: baseball cap or regulation mazepynka

Pixel MM-14 is the base camouflage of the Ukrainian Armed Forces field uniform, so people usually pick a pixel cap to make the headwear match the field jacket and trousers. It is worn by soldiers on duty, cadets and volunteers, as well as by anyone putting together a matching kit for training exercises or airsoft. This one color covers two different types of product: tactical baseball caps with hook-and-loop panels and regulation mazepynka caps with a cockade. Which type you need determines the fit, the sizing choice and where such headwear is appropriate.

Pixel baseball cap or mazepynka: which to choose

The mazepynka is the regulation cap of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with a stiff visor and a cockade with the coat of arms on the front. It has a restrained, uniform look, so it is chosen for service at the unit, formations and events where a uniform appearance of personnel matters. Patches are not attached to it: there is no space for hook-and-loop panels, and that is exactly what makes it neat but less flexible.

The pixel baseball cap is the field option. A hook-and-loop panel on the front, and on some models also at the back and on top, lets you attach a unit patch, a flag, a blood type patch or a call sign and swap them quickly. Pixel caps with an embroidered coat of arms or trident are closer to everyday wear than to field use. The cotton-lined newsboy cap stands apart: it is more of a civilian style in military camouflage.

Before you buy a pixel cap for service, check with your unit which headwear is permitted with the uniform, since requirements differ between units. If you need a different color or style, browse all tactical baseball caps and hats.

Ripstop, cotton or twill

Ripstop is a fabric with a reinforcing grid of threads: if it snags on a branch, the tear does not spread further. It wrinkles little, holds its shape and dries quickly after rain or washing, so it suits field conditions and long-term wear better. The downside is that it feels rougher to the touch than cotton, which is noticeable in the heat.

A cotton cap is softer and more pleasant against the skin and breathes well, so it is comfortable for everyday wear in warm weather. However, it takes longer to dry, wrinkles more, and the camouflage gradually fades from frequent washing and sun. Twill is a dense cotton weave with a noticeable diagonal ribbing: it is stronger than ordinary cotton but just as natural to the touch.

If you need headwear for summer, pay attention to ventilation. Mesh panels, as in the baseball cap with an embroidered coat of arms and mesh, or stitched eyelets, as in the ripstop mazepynka, help keep your head from overheating.

How to get the size and fit right

A baseball cap is usually adjusted with a hook-and-loop strap at the back, so it is enough to fall within the size range. Size markings vary: by letters S, M, L or by head circumference in centimeters, for example in the ripstop baseball cap with three hook-and-loop panels and earphone cutouts, S corresponds to 56, M to 58, L to 60. Mazepynkas, on the other hand, are sewn for a fixed circumference: the V&T cotton mazepynka cap is offered in separate sizes 57, 58 and 59.

So before ordering, measure your head with a measuring tape along the line above the eyebrows and slightly above the ears. If your circumference falls between two sizes of a regulation cap, take the larger one: a mazepynka that is too small cannot be stretched, and it will press on your forehead.

A deep fit is useful when the cap must stay on in the wind and not fly off during movement or bending. Earphone cutouts are needed by those who wear active earmuffs or a headset over their headwear: without them the band presses the fabric and the cap shifts. During shooting and communications drills, this matters more than it seems when trying it on.

Frequently asked questions

Does a pixel baseball cap go with a uniform in a different camouflage?

It is better not to mix them. A cap in pixel MM-14 looks natural with a uniform of the same pattern, but with multicam or olive it makes a mismatched kit. Besides, pixel shades differ slightly between manufacturers, so for an exact match it is worth comparing the cap with the uniform in person.

How much does a pixel cap cost?

Prices start from 350 UAH and go up to 750 UAH. The cost is affected by the fabric, the number of hook-and-loop panels, embroidery and extra details such as mesh or insulation.

Is there a pixel cap for cool weather?

Yes, there is an insulated baseball cap with a fold-down flap over the ears and the back of the neck. It comes in handy when an ordinary summer cap no longer keeps you warm, but it is too early for a hat. For real cold, a warm hat is still more reliable.
