Docker Caps — Tactical Brimless Caps
Docker cap — a tactical brimless cap
A docker cap is a compact brimless cap that fits snugly on the head and does not interfere with wearing a helmet, active earmuffs, or a hood. It is also called a docker hat or brimless cap. The shape is simple, but tactical models are sewn with field needs in mind: the size is adjusted with a hook-and-loop strap, and there are ventilation inserts or insulation. Ukrainian-made docker caps differ mainly by season, camouflage color, and details such as patch panels, so start your choice with when and for what you will wear it.
Why a brimless cap, and when it is more convenient than a baseball cap
The brim of a regular cap presses against the edge of the helmet, pushes it down onto the forehead, and gets in the way when working with optics. A docker cap does not have this flaw: it lies on the head in a thin layer, absorbs sweat, protects the skin from chafing by the helmet suspension system, and keeps hair out of the way. That is why it is chosen by military personnel, airsoft players, and those who work in a hard hat.
Without a helmet, a docker cap is also practical: it does not fly off in the wind, folds easily into a pocket, and keeps its shape. But it does not shade the face from the sun. If shade for the eyes matters more and a helmet is not needed, it is better to look at baseball caps and tactical caps or tactical boonie hats.
How to choose a docker cap by season
The demi-season docker cap is the basic option, made of a cotton-blend fabric. It is dense enough to hold its shape and at the same time does not overheat the head, so it is worn under a helmet for most of the year.
The summer docker cap has mesh inserts on the sides. Heat and moisture escape through them, so in hot weather the head sweats less and the fabric dries faster. It is convenient to view such models separately: summer mesh docker caps.
The insulated docker cap has a softshell outer and fleece side panels. Softshell protects from wind, and fleece retains warmth. Keep in mind that insulation adds thickness: under a helmet, you may need to loosen the suspension system slightly. For severe frost, tactical beanies or balaclavas, which also cover the ears and neck, are a better fit.
Color, patches, and decorative models
Choose camouflage to match the rest of your uniform and the terrain: MM-14 pixel, Multicam, olive, and coyote for field conditions, black models for the city and everyday wear. Headwear in a different pattern from the jacket makes the silhouette stand out, so it is better to keep the whole set in one camouflage pattern.
Some models have a hook-and-loop panel for a patch, a blood type marking, or a call sign. A separate option is docker caps with a removable "Cat Eyes" patch on hook-and-loop: it can be removed when a more discreet look is needed, and your own patch can be placed instead.
Docker caps with cat ears are decorative: this is headwear for an everyday look or a gift. For wearing under a helmet, choose tactical models.
Size, fit, and care
Size is indicated by the letters S, M, L or by a range of head circumference in centimeters. Measure the circumference with a tape across the forehead above the eyebrows and the most prominent point at the back of the head, and then compare it with the sizes of the specific model. The hook-and-loop strap provides some adjustment room, but under a helmet the docker cap should sit without wrinkles: excess fabric bunches up and presses.
Before washing, fasten the hook-and-loop strap so that it does not snag the fabric or get clogged with lint. Wash by hand or on a delicate cycle in cool water, and do not wring out the mesh inserts hard. Do not wash softshell with fabric softener or dry it on a radiator — this worsens the protective properties of the fabric.
Frequently asked questions
How does a docker cap differ from a regular cap?
The main difference is the absence of a brim. Thanks to this, a docker cap does not interfere with a helmet, optics, and earmuffs, and also fits more snugly on the head.
Is a docker cap suitable for women?
Yes, tactical docker caps are unisex. The hook-and-loop adjustment allows you to fit the cap to a smaller head within the size range.
How much does a docker cap cost?
Prices for docker caps range from 350 to 635 UAH; the exact price depends on the model. We deliver across Ukraine.
Can a docker cap with a patch be washed?
Yes, but it is better to detach a removable patch and wash the headwear separately. This way the hook-and-loop wears out less, and the patch keeps its look longer.
Look for other models for service and leisure in the headwear category, and for neck and face protection, take a look at buffs and shemaghs and bandanas.
