Tactical Ballistic Helmets and Helmet Covers
Tactical Helmet: How to Choose a Ballistic Helmet and Cover
A tactical helmet is chosen by three parameters: cut shape, shell material and size. The cut determines which part of the head is covered and whether active headsets will fit, while the size determines whether a combat helmet will shift while running. A helmet cover and a counterweight are accessories: they provide camouflage, give space for attachments and balance the weight, but they do not add protection.
FAST or MICH: Which Cut You Need
A FAST helmet has a high cut above the ears. In the High Cut and especially Super High Cut versions, such as the SXE GROUP BURAN 4.0, the ears are exposed, so tactical headsets can be worn with the helmet, and it is convenient to mount a flashlight or camera on the side rails. This is the choice for those who constantly work with communications and mounted equipment.
A MICH helmet covers more: Mid Cut covers about half of the ear, Full Cut covers the ear and temples completely. The downside is compatibility: not all headsets fit under the lower edge, so check them together with the helmet.
Material and Size
A ballistic helmet is made from aramid or ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). A Kevlar helmet is an aramid shell: for the aramid SXE GROUP Eclipse MICH, NIJ IIIA and DSTU 1 are stated in the description, and for the SXE GROUP Eclipse Gen 2 High Cut made of UHMWPE, NIJ IIIA. Check the protection class for the specific model, not by the material.
Size is determined by head circumference above the eyebrows. For the SXE GROUP Eclipse, size M is designed for 53–55 cm, and size L for 56–58 cm. A military helmet should fit snugly, not block your field of view and not wobble when you shake your head; the pads and suspension system fine-tune the fit, but they will not fix a shell that is too large.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which helmet cover should I choose?
The one that matches the shape of the helmet. A FAST cover is sewn to fit its cut, with hook-and-loop fasteners and mesh, for example made of Oxford fabric. A universal helmet cover made of 1000D nylon stays in place with an elastic band with a cord lock and fits MICH. Choose the color — Multicam, olive, pixel, white camo or MTP — to match your uniform.
Why do I need a helmet counterweight?
It balances the weight of a night vision device mounted at the front. A counterweight with a battery pouch attaches with hook-and-loop fasteners to the back of the cover and reduces the forward pull on the helmet.
How do I care for a ballistic helmet?
Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight, do not clean it with solvents, and wash the cover separately. After a strong impact, inspect the shell for cracks and delamination.
