Kevlar Helmet: Aramid Ballistic Helmets
Aramid Kevlar Helmet: How to Choose the Right One
Kevlar helmets are sought by military personnel and law enforcement officers who need ballistic head protection. All aramid models here come from the Ukrainian manufacturer SXE GROUP, with prices from 13 730 to 15 780 UAH. They differ mainly in cut, weight and size range, so your choice comes down to how you will wear the helmet and which headset you will use with it.
Why "Kevlar" if the material is aramid?
"Kevlar" is a colloquial name commonly used for any aramid helmet. In fact, it is the trademark of one of the aramid fiber manufacturers, not a separate material. According to the descriptions, the Eclipse Gen 3 is made from aramid sheets by Teijin, and the Eclipse Gen 2 from Twaron fibers.
For the buyer, something else matters more: the descriptions of all three models state DSTU 1 and NIJ IIIA protection class. Helmets of this class are not designed to stop rifle rounds, so do not overestimate their capabilities.
Which cut should you choose?
| Model | What it covers | Weight per description |
|---|---|---|
| BURAN 4.0 Super High Cut | Ears exposed | 1300 g (S, M), 1350 g (L) |
| Eclipse Gen 3 Mid Cut | Half of the ear | 1400 g |
| Eclipse Gen 2 Full Cut | Ear and temple area | 1500 g |
The deeper the cut, the larger the protected area, but the weight is also greater, and active headphones are harder to combine with a Full Cut. Super High Cut is chosen by those who constantly work with a headset and radio and wear the helmet for long periods. Mid Cut is a compromise between temple protection and headset compatibility, while Full Cut makes sense where maximum coverage is the priority.
How to avoid mistakes with size
Measure your head circumference above the eyebrows. Size S (50–52 cm) is available only in the BURAN 4.0, the Eclipse models come in M (53–55 cm) and L (56–58 cm), and the L in the BURAN 4.0 covers 56–59 cm. A typical mistake is taking a helmet one size larger "just in case": it will shift and block your field of view. The SXE BOA+ fit system in the BURAN 4.0 lets you fine-tune the fit with a dial. For other types and materials, see the section all helmets and covers.
