MICH Ballistic Helmet: How to Choose the Cut, Material and Size

The MICH helmet has a lower shell edge than high-cut helmets, so it covers the sides of the head better. It is chosen by those who value coverage area rather than just light weight. Before buying, decide on the cut, material and size: these determine how the helmet will behave on your head.

Mid Cut or Full Cut: Which to Choose

A MICH Mid Cut helmet, such as the SXE GROUP Eclipse Gen 3 Mid Cut, covers half of the ear. The description of this aramid model lists a weight of 1400 g. This cut is a compromise between coverage and room for headsets, so try your headset on together with the helmet.

A MICH Full Cut helmet, such as the SXE GROUP Eclipse Gen 2 Full Cut, covers the ear and temple area of the head, and its weight according to the description is 1500 g. If you plan to wear a Full Cut helmet together with active headsets, check in advance whether their ear cups fit under the edge of the shell.

Aramid or UHMWPE

The Eclipse models are made of aramid. The descriptions of the Eclipse Gen 2 and Gen 3 state protection class DSTU 1 and NIJ IIIA. The unbranded UHMWPE MICH helmet weighs 1.5 kg. Its description states NIJ IIIA and compatibility with active headsets.

Polyethylene is sensitive to strong heat. So do not leave such a helmet in a hot car or near a heater. Aramid is less afraid of heat, but it should be protected from prolonged moisture and direct sunlight.

Size and Accessories

The Eclipse models are made in sizes M and L, while the UHMWPE helmet comes only in size L, for a head circumference of 55–60 cm. Measure the circumference above the eyebrows and around the widest part of the back of the head. A typical mistake is to take a helmet with room to grow into: with an oversized shell, the night vision device pulls the helmet forward and the edge slides down over the eyes.

All of these helmets have side rails, night vision device mounts and Velcro, so a flashlight, marker or patch can be installed without modifications. Choose a helmet cover in the tactical helmets and covers section.
