Tactical Backpack 100 L and Up: Who Needs This Capacity

An 81–120 L backpack is for when all your gear has to be carried on your back: rotations, moving between positions, long expeditions or self-sufficient treks. A sleeping bag, warm clothing, food supplies, hygiene items and spare clothes fit in one pack, leaving your hands free. For everyday outings this capacity is too big, so smaller tactical backpacks are better for those; keep the large one for moves with a full load.

Framed or Frameless

A frameless backpack, such as the Tactical Backpack 85 L Multicam, is softer, lighter on its own and easier to load into a car trunk or truck bed. It suits bulky but not very heavy loads, or a pack that mostly travels in a vehicle.

A framed model holds its shape even when fully loaded and does not sag against your back. An aluminum frame is stiffer and handles heavy loads better, while plastic stiffeners are more flexible and lighter. For a march on foot with dozens of kilograms of gear, choose a frame.

100 L or 120 L Backpack

The difference in capacity seems small, but every extra liter gets filled and the weight grows. A 120 L backpack makes sense for winter rotations or when you need to take all your gear in one trip. If part of your gear travels separately, a 100 L backpack will be more compact and less of a hindrance.

A tall backpack catches on your helmet when you lie prone and snags on everything in cramped transport. Heavy loads are often set on the ground, so check the bottom: framed 120 L models with an aluminum frame are rated with extra bottom protection.

How to Pack a Large Backpack

Put the heaviest items close to your back, roughly at shoulder-blade level, and the light sleeping bag at the bottom. Keep what you need on the way in outer pockets or MOLLE pouches so you don't dig through the whole pack. Don't stuff the backpack to the limit just because there is room: an overloaded pack wears you out faster than it seems at the start.
