Tactical cotton T-shirts: cotton tees, long sleeves and polos
Tactical cotton T-shirt: who needs one
A cotton T-shirt is the kind of clothing you want to wear all day: it is soft, does not build up static and does not irritate the skin, even for people sensitive to synthetics. A tactical version differs from a regular T-shirt in its cut, uniform-matching colors and stronger seams. This T-shirt is worn every day, under a field jacket or shirt, during downtime between missions, and for training without heavy load.
Where cotton wins and where synthetics are the better choice
Cotton absorbs moisture rather than wicking it away. In normal conditions that is an advantage: sweat is absorbed by the fabric, the body does not feel a sticky film, and the T-shirt stays pleasant to wear. That is why a cotton T-shirt suits indoor duty, travel, everyday life and cool evenings, when comfort matters more than fast drying.
The downside shows up under load. When you move a lot in hot weather, cotton becomes saturated with moisture, gets heavy and dries slowly. Under body armor or a plate carrier, a wet cotton T-shirt can chafe the skin and chill the body when you stop. For long outings with full gear, it is better to have a synthetic T-shirt, and keep the cotton one as a spare so you can change into a dry one.
How to judge the quality of a cotton T-shirt
Start with the density of the knit. A fabric that is too thin quickly becomes see-through and stretches at the shoulders from backpack straps. A fabric that is too dense is heavy in hot weather. As a benchmark: for the Pentagon Ageron Shape the manufacturer states 165 g/m², a medium-density fabric for everyday wear. Next, pay attention to the type of yarn. Ring-spun cotton, as in the Pentagon Ageron Fearless Warrior, has a smoother and stronger thread. Piqué cotton is combed: the short fibers have been removed from it, so the fabric pills less.
Look at the seams and the neckline. Double stitching on the shoulders and a dense collar finish hold their shape longer. A model with reinforced shoulders makes sense if you constantly carry a backpack. Keep in mind that cotton may shrink a little after the first few washes. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. Wash the T-shirt inside out in cool water: this way both the color and the print will last longer.
T-shirt, long-sleeve raglan, tank top or polo
A classic short-sleeve T-shirt is a basic item for any season. A long-sleeve raglan covers your arms from the sun and mosquitoes and is handy as a base layer in cool weather. In a raglan with the Armed Forces of Ukraine emblem and pixel or Multicam sleeves, the body is olive and the sleeves are camouflage, so it goes well with field uniform. For builds that standard sizing does not fit, there are plus sizes. A tank top and a striped tank top are for hot weather or as the thinnest layer under clothing.
A cotton piqué polo, for example a Pentagon polo, has a collar and a button placket. It looks neater than a T-shirt, so it is appropriate where a reserved look is needed without a field jacket. As for color: olive and coyote go with most uniforms, and black is universal for everyday wear. Prices for cotton models range from 200 to 1 320 UAH. Frequently asked questions
Will a cotton T-shirt shrink after washing?
A slight shrinkage is normal for cotton, especially after the first wash in hot water. To reduce it, wash in cool water and do not dry the T-shirt on a radiator or in a tumble dryer at high temperature. If you are unsure about the size, choose a slightly larger one.
Can I wear a cotton T-shirt under a plate carrier?
You can, but for a short time or in cool weather. During prolonged exertion cotton gets wet and dries slowly, so bring a dry T-shirt to change into. For long outings in hot weather, synthetics are a better fit.
How is a piqué cotton T-shirt different from a regular one?
Piqué is combed cotton, from which the short fibers are removed during production. The fabric made from it is smoother, softer and pills less. That is why such a T-shirt keeps a neat look longer if you wash it often.
