Magazine Pouches: How to Choose the Type and Number of Slots
A magazine pouch is the foundation of a rifleman's load-bearing setup. It determines how quickly you can draw a spare magazine and whether you lose it while moving. These pouches are mounted on a plate carrier, a chest rig, or a combat belt. Before buying, decide on three things: the design, the number of slots, and the magazine the pouch is made for.
Open or Closed: Speed or Security
In an open pouch, the magazine is held by an elastic strap on top or by a snug body. It can be drawn with one hand with no extra movement, so this type is chosen for assault actions, fast shooting, and any situation where seconds decide. The downside is that when crawling, jumping, or running through brush, the magazine can snag or fall out, and dirt and sand get inside more easily.
A closed pouch covers the magazines with a flap. They take longer to draw, but the contents are protected and will not fall out even when you move while lying down. This option suits long watches at a position, patrolling, and spare magazines that you do not reach for right away.
There are also compromise models. For example, a double closed AK / RPK pouch with rigid inserts can, according to its description, also be worn with the flap folded back when you need a faster reload.
Single, Double, or Triple
A single pouch is the most flexible: it is easy to place exactly where your hand naturally reaches, for example on the side of the belt or on a free row of webbing. Several single pouches let you spread magazines around your body instead of keeping them in one bulky "brick".
A double pouch holds two magazines in one body. It takes up less space on the webbing than two separate single pouches and is quicker to attach. That is why a double AK magazine pouch is most often chosen for plate carriers and vests. A triple pouch makes sense when you need to place a larger supply on your chest. However, it is wider, heavier when loaded, and may get in the way when shooting from the prone position, so try it on together with the rest of your gear.
Which Magazine the Pouch Is Made For
Go by the marking in the product name: AK, RPK, AK / RPK, AK / AR, or 5.56. An RPK magazine is longer than a standard rifle magazine, so a pouch for it is deeper: a regular AK magazine will sit lower in it and be harder to draw. Universal models with a dual marking help when you have several types of weapons. Before heading out, be sure to check how snugly your particular magazine fits.
A PKM box pouch is a separate item for a machine gun belt box, and it is not intended for magazines. The Helikon-Tex Double Rifle Magazine Insert and Triple Elastic Insert are also not standalone pouches for webbing: they are placed inside other gear. For the Triple Elastic Insert, compatibility with the Versatile Insert System is stated in the specifications.
Material, Rigidity, and Attachment
Magazine pouches are usually made of nylon and attach via the MOLLE system. Before buying, make sure your vest or belt has enough free rows of webbing. A soft pouch is lighter, quieter, and takes up no extra space when empty. A rigid pouch or one with rigid inserts holds its shape: an empty slot does not collapse, so you can return the magazine to its place with one hand without looking. Elastic models grip the magazine tightly, but over time the elastic stretches, so check the tension periodically. If you also need pouches for a first aid kit or a tourniquet, see all tactical pouches.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a magazine pouch cost?
Prices range from 330 to 1 180 UAH. The cost is affected by the number of slots, the presence of a flap and rigid inserts, and the material. Compare the design first, not just the price.
Can a closed pouch be worn open?
Yes, if the design allows it. Some closed models with rigid inserts hold the magazine well even with the flap folded back. In a soft pouch with the flap folded back, the magazine may wobble, so it is better to test this way of carrying in advance.
Which is better: a double pouch or two single ones?
A double pouch is more compact and quicker to attach, so it is convenient on a plate carrier. Two single pouches give more freedom in placement, for example if you want to keep one magazine on your belt. Choose based on how much free space you have on your gear and where you are more comfortable reloading.
