Wool socks for cold weather and long marches

Wool socks are the choice of people who spend many hours out in the cold: on guard duty, in a dugout, on a winter hike or while hunting. Wool, merino in particular, keeps you warm even when your foot is sweaty, and it takes longer to develop an unpleasant smell, so a pair can be worn for several days in a row. Prices start at 290 UAH and go up to 520 UAH.

Why wool beats synthetic winter socks

Synthetics dry faster, but when damp they feel noticeably cold. Wool fiber absorbs part of the moisture into its core and stays warm to the touch, so your feet get less cold during stops after moving. Wool also naturally inhibits bacteria growth, and therefore odor.

There are downsides too: pure wool wears through quickly at the heel and toe and shrinks after hot washing. That is why wool thermal socks are almost always blended with synthetics, which add durability and help the sock hold its shape.

How to read the composition label

Merino wool is finer and softer than regular wool, so merino socks rarely itch. The wool content differs from model to model: for example, the Pentagon Alpine Merino is listed with 40% Merino wool, while the Bandit Makalu compression socks contain 25% merino wool, because their base is polyamide for a snug fit. Polyamide reinforces the high-friction zones, and elastane keeps the sock on your foot without wrinkles.

Pay attention to construction as well. The Meindl MT6 has a double-layer knit designed for long winter marches, while models such as Zorya are listed as seamless, which reduces the risk of blisters in boots.

Size, fit and care

Sizes are given as ranges, so go by your shoe size and don't buy a pair "to grow into": extra folds cause chafing. The most common mistake is putting a thick winter sock into snug boots. If your footwear is tight, circulation weakens and your foot gets cold even in the warmest wool.

Wash merino wool socks in cool water on a gentle cycle and dry them away from a radiator, and they won't shrink. You can find other seasonal options among all tactical socks.

Frequently asked questions

Do merino socks itch?

Usually not. Merino fibers are thin and don't irritate the skin, and the synthetic threads in the blend make the fabric even softer. If your skin is very sensitive, choose a model with a higher share of merino wool.

How many pairs should I take on a trip?

At least two or three. While one pair is on your feet, you can dry another, since wool dries more slowly than synthetics. In winter, a dry spare pair matters more than the thickness of the sock.
