Olive shorts for hot weather, training and field outings

Olive tactical shorts are chosen by those who need a practical piece for the heat: for range sessions, hiking, fishing, work on a plot of land or everyday city movement. Olive is one of the basic colors of a military wardrobe, so these shorts fit easily into an outfit with a black, khaki or coyote T-shirt or polo. At the same time, models in the same color differ noticeably in fabric, cut and size chart. That is what determines how comfortable they are to move in.

Which material to choose: stretch nylon, ripstop or cotton

Nylon with elastane (spandex) is the choice for active movement. Such shorts stretch, don't restrict squatting, running or climbing, and dry quickly after washing or rain. Examples are Yinren 8.0 or Emersongear BlueLabel. The manufacturer designed Helikon-Tex Utility Light shorts specifically for hot days and intense training, and their waist is adjustable with a drawcord. The downside of synthetics is that the smooth fabric feels different from cotton, and not everyone finds it pleasant against the skin.

Ripstop is a fabric with a reinforcing thread that stops a small tear from spreading further. It is stiffer than stretch fabric, but withstands friction against branches, rocks and gear better. For demanding outings, look for models with reinforced areas, such as Viking reinforced ripstop shorts. Ripstop often contains cotton, so it dries more slowly than pure nylon.

Cotton shorts and capri pants are the simplest option. They are soft and pleasant to wear, but stay damp for a long time after getting wet and wrinkle more easily. For everyday wear and leisure this isn't a problem. For training after which clothes are soaked with sweat, it is better to take synthetics.

Length and cut: classic, cargo, joggers or capri

Classic tactical shorts have a straight cut and a length just above the knee. Some manufacturers state the length right in the name: for Yinren OTS it is 8.5". Shorter models give the knee more freedom when running. Longer ones cover the leg better when you kneel or sit on the ground.

Cargo models have bulky patch pockets on the thighs, convenient for a phone, a flashlight or a tourniquet. However, heavy items in them swing around when running. For example, G1 ripstop shorts are stated to have eight pockets reinforced against tearing off. Joggers with cuffs at the bottom fit the leg more snugly and don't catch on branches. Capri pants cover the knee: they suit those who often work on their knees or want to protect their legs from scratches and insects.

How to choose a size and not go wrong with the shade

Size charts differ between models. Some are marked with letters from S to 3XL, others with sizes from 46 to 60, and still others with a waist/length pair in inches, such as 32/32 M. Go not by your usual letter, but by the size table of the specific model. If the fabric is elastic or the waist has an elastic band, you need less room at the waist. For instance, G1 has a front button supplemented by elastic at the back.

Olive from different brands is not the same shade. Helikon-Tex, for example, makes olive shorts in Taiga Green and Olive Drab shades, and side by side they look different. If you are putting together an outfit with a top from another manufacturer, compare the photos and the shade name. That way you will avoid a noticeable difference between the shorts and the jacket or T-shirt.

Olive shorts cost from 670 to 3 220 UAH. Branded stretch nylon models usually cost more, while simple cotton and unbranded ripstop ones cost less. If you need another color or camouflage, browse all tactical shorts.

Frequently asked questions about olive shorts

Are olive tactical shorts suitable for sports?

Yes, if you choose a model made of stretch fabric. Stretch nylon doesn't restrict movement during squats and running and dries quickly. Cotton models are less comfortable for intense training because they hold moisture for a long time.

How do tactical shorts differ from regular summer shorts?

First of all, by a more durable fabric, reinforced seams and pockets, and a well-thought-out pocket layout for small gear. They are made with active movement and load in mind. That is why they keep their look longer where regular shorts wear out quickly.

How do I combine olive shorts with other clothes?

The easiest way is to wear them with a top in neutral colors: black, gray, khaki, coyote or olive as well. If you want a single-color outfit, choose items in the same shade or from the same brand. That way the top and bottom won't differ in tone.
