A uniform with knee pads is made for people who spend a lot of time on their knees: kneeling shooting positions, work in a trench, vehicle repair, evacuation, training at the range. The protective inserts are already in the pants pockets, so you don't have to look separately for compatible knee pads and wonder whether they will fit the pocket size. You get a ready-made set where the top, the pants and the knee protection are matched to each other from day one.

Which set composition to choose

The simplest option is a tactical suit with knee pads in a UBACS + pants format. It suits warm weather and constant work in a plate carrier: the top doesn't overheat under the gear, and the pants take the load when you go down on one knee. Built-in protection works only when the pocket with the insert sits exactly over the kneecap. This is affected by the pants length and the rise: pants that are too long push the knee pad below the knee, and it presses on the shin, while pants that are too short lift it onto the thigh. So when choosing a size, check not only your waist circumference but also your height against the model's size chart.

After you receive them, try on the pants with knee pads in a kneeling position and in a squat, not just standing. The insert should not slide sideways or press its edge into the joint. In some models the position can be adjusted: for example, for the G3 pants in the R&M set the seller states that the knee pads are height-adjustable, and for the Idogear pants in the Godzilla set the knee pads are removable. Where the limits of built-in protection lie

Inserts in pockets are good because they are always with you and don't chafe with straps under the knee. At the same time, this is a compromise between protection and comfort: for long work on rocks, gravel or concrete, their rigidity may not be enough. In such conditions some people wear external knee pads over them as well, but then the pants become bulkier at the knees, so check that you can still move comfortably.

The second typical mistake is taking a uniform one size smaller "so it fits snugly". A tight pant leg presses the insert and chafes during long sitting, and in a squat the fabric is stretched over the knees.
