Multicam softshell pants: what to look for

Multicam is a camouflage worn in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, so softshell pants in this pattern are most often chosen for service, field exits and training in cool weather. A dense stretch outer layer with fleece inside blocks the wind, while the pattern helps you blend into grass, bushes and soil. Prices start from 1 160 UAH and go up to 2 490 UAH depending on insulation, reinforcements and pockets. If color is not critical for you, browse all softshell pants — there are solid-color options there.

Where Multicam works and where it doesn't

Multicam was designed as a universal camouflage: it blends green, brown and sandy tones, so it disappears well in forests, in fields with dry grass, in tree lines and on mixed terrain. It suits autumn and spring best, when the greenery is not yet or no longer dense and the ground is exposed — and that is exactly the season softshell pants are made for.

On snow, however, Multicam stands out, and in winter a camouflage cover or a white suit is often worn over it. In the city this camouflage looks distinctly military: for civilian wear or security work, solid-color pants are more practical. So choose Multicam when you truly need concealment or when your unit's uniform requires it.

How to match pants to your jacket and gear

One thing worth knowing: the Multicam shade differs between fabric manufacturers. In some it is warmer and more reddish, in others greener. If you want the set to look cohesive, buy the jacket and pants from the same manufacturer, or compare them in daylight rather than in photos. In the field a slight difference in tone is not critical, but for a uniform at formation it catches the eye.

Then choose based on your tasks. For low-mobility service in the cold, fleece-lined models are a good fit, such as the Viking line with a raised waist. If you walk a lot or wear thermal underwear, the Esdy microfleece model is more comfortable. For work on your knees, look for pants with sewn-in latex 2-4 mm thick or with pockets for knee pads — plastic knee pads can also be found in Multicam so they don't break up the pattern.

How to preserve the camouflage pattern

Camouflage fades over time, and the lighter it gets, the worse it conceals. To slow this down, wash the pants inside out, don't dry them in direct sunlight and avoid products with bleach — they wash out precisely the dark patches of the pattern. Detergents for colored clothes work better than universal powders.

Latex knee patches get dirty and darken faster than the fabric itself, so brush them off after every outing without waiting for the wash. And if one pair has already faded while the other is new, don't wear them with the same jacket: the difference in tone will be noticeable even from a distance.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear Multicam in winter?

You can, but concealment on snow will be weak. As a base layer the pants do their job, and for ambushes or positions on open snow a camouflage cover is worn over them. In a snowless winter Multicam remains appropriate.

Does Multicam fade a lot?

Like any camouflage, it lightens from sun and frequent washing. Washing inside out, drying in the shade and using products without bleach noticeably extend the life of the pattern. The fabric keeps its protective properties; only the color changes.

Can you combine Multicam with Pixel?

Technically nothing prevents it, but a mixed set conceals worse because the patterns have different structures. Besides, in many units the uniform must be in one color scheme. It is better to keep the whole set in the same camouflage.
