Esdy UBACS: A Combat Shirt for Wearing Under Body Armor and Load-Bearing Gear

The Esdy UBACS is made for those who wear a plate carrier, body armor or a chest rig for long periods: on duty, during training, at the range or on field missions. Like any Esdy combat shirt, it is a hybrid shirt. The torso, which ends up under the armor, is lighter and breathes better. The sleeves stay exposed and rub against your gear, so they are made of denser fabric. First decide on the sleeve length, then on the cut details and the color to match your kit.

Long or Short Sleeves

Long-sleeve models are more versatile. They protect your arms from scratches, sun and insects, and have reinforced forearms, adjustable hook-and-loop cuffs and pockets for elbow pads. If you often work lying down or from your knees, lean on your elbows or crawl, choose long sleeves. An elbow pad in the pocket stays in place and does not need separate elastic straps.

Short sleeves, including in the Frog models, are appropriate in hot weather, during training and in the rear, when you do not need to cover your arms. In the CoolPass version, the torso is sewn from CoolPass fabric and the sleeves from a denser material. The downside is obvious: bare arms are more vulnerable to scratches and sun, and elbow pads have to be worn on straps.

A typical mistake is buying only a short-sleeve shirt because it is summer outside. For a long trip into the field, it is better to have both options and choose by the task, not by the season.

Details Worth Paying Attention To

Long-sleeve models use a raglan sleeve. The seam runs from the collar to the armpit, so your shoulder is not restricted when you raise your arms, aim or work overhead. The mesh on the collar reduces neck chafing when the armor collar or straps lie on top. Mesh inserts on the chest and sides and ventilation zones under the armpits release heat exactly where the body sweats the most under armor.

Also look at the pockets and panels. The Coyote model, for example, has two sleeve pockets with YKK zippers. On the chest of some versions there are hook-and-loop panels for patches and insignia. The closure is a half-length zipper: during a break you can unzip the shirt and let it air out without taking it off.

Color and Fit

Under a plate carrier the torso is barely visible, so the camouflage is effectively provided by the sleeves and collar. Those are what you should compare with the color of your trousers and vest. For example, in some Multicam models the central part of the chest and stomach is made of beige mesh. Under armor it does not get in the way, but when you wear the shirt on its own, the contrasting insert is noticeable.

The cut of the Esdy combat shirt is athletic and close-fitting. Under body armor this is an advantage, because there are no folds that press and chafe. If you plan to wear thermal underwear under the UBACS or prefer a looser fit, check the size chart and consider going one size up. The size range is wide, so the shirt is easy to pick even for a stocky build.
