Black UBACS: who it's for and what it's used for

A black UBACS is chosen by those who need a combat shirt to wear under body armor or a chest rig, but not for camouflage in the field. These are security guards, shooters at the range, instructors of tactical courses and airsoft players who play in dark kits. It pairs easily with black pants, a plate carrier and pouches, and in the city it doesn't look like camouflage and draws less attention. The design is the same as any other UBACS: a lighter torso under armor, tougher sleeves and collar. Prices range from 1 000 to 3 220 UAH.

Where solid black makes sense

In nature, solid black looks like one big dark patch. The silhouette stands out clearly against greenery, dry grass or snow, especially at a distance and in motion. That's why Multicam or olive suit field outings where concealment matters better. A black tactical shirt is appropriate at the range, at security sites, in the city and during training.

How black fabric behaves in wear

In the sun, black heats up more than light colors. Under body armor this is less noticeable because the torso is covered anyway, but the sleeves and shoulders heat up in direct sunlight. For summer, look at models with short sleeves or mesh inserts. For example, in the short-sleeve Esdy the lower part has a mesh texture for ventilation.

Black also shows everything: dust, sand, lint and white salt marks from sweat. Dark fabric gradually fades from washing and sun. The torso and sleeves are made of different materials, so they may fade unevenly, and over time their shades drift apart. Black items from different manufacturers rarely match in shade even when new, so it's better to try the set on together.

To keep a black UBACS black for longer, wash it inside out in cool water, with detergent for dark clothes and without bleach. Dry the shirt in the shade. Before washing, fasten the hook-and-loop fasteners so they don't snag the fabric and leave pulls.

Which design details are worth considering

A long sleeve protects the arms from scratches and friction and holds elbow pads better, while snug cuffs keep the sleeve from riding up. A short sleeve is suitable for hot weather when arm protection isn't needed. If you use elbow pads, look for a model with pockets for them on the sleeves: the inserts there don't shift and the straps don't press.

For shooting with a belt holster, pay attention to the side panels. In the Helikon-Tex Range shirt they are made of VersaStretch and take the friction from the holster and pouches. In the Helikon-Tex MCDU the sleeves and collar are made of NyCo ripstop, resistant to tearing and abrasion. The names CoolMax or CoolPass in model names denote the torso fabric.

There are also separate options: a women's UBACS made of stretch fabric and a plus-size model with elbow pad pockets. Look for other colors and cuts among all UBACS and tactical shirts.

Frequently asked questions

Is a black UBACS suitable for field outings?

For concealment — not really, because solid black stands out against natural backgrounds. For training, shooting and work where concealment doesn't matter, it works perfectly well.

Won't a black UBACS be too hot in summer?

In direct sunlight, black fabric heats up more than light fabric. A short sleeve and mesh inserts that improve ventilation will help reduce discomfort. Under body armor the difference between colors is less noticeable.

Is there a difference between a combat shirt and a UBACS?

Essentially no: they are names for the same type of clothing. UBACS is an English abbreviation, and «combat shirt» is its Ukrainian equivalent. The difference between models lies in the cut, fabrics and details, not in the name.
