Fleece UBACS — tactical shirt with an insulated torso
Fleece UBACS for the cold season
A fleece UBACS is for those who find an ordinary combat shirt not enough in cold weather, while a thick sweater bunches up under body armor. The fleece torso keeps heat where you get cold first: on the back, chest and neck. The sleeves and shoulders are made of a denser fabric, so the shirt withstands friction from gear. This kind of model is chosen for autumn, winter and early spring, for field outings, duty shifts and long days outdoors.
How a fleece UBACS differs from a regular one
A summer or mid-season UBACS has a torso made of thin knit fabric that quickly wicks away moisture. A fleece one has a warm, napped material in the same place. It dries more slowly and breathes less, so in warm weather you will be hot in it. That makes it a piece for cold conditions, not a year-round replacement for a summer shirt.
The construction otherwise stays familiar. For example, in the fleece UBACS in MM-14 pixel and in the R&M model, the shoulders and sleeves are made of ripstop. This fabric handles straps and friction better than fleece. The half-zip on the chest lets you vent quickly while on the move. Velcro cuffs adjust to fit over gloves.
Regular, ribbed fleece or microfleece
Classic fleece is the warmest and softest, but also the bulkiest. It is worth choosing if you mostly stand still or wear the shirt without armor. Microfleece is thinner, so under body armor and a chest rig it adds almost no thickness. Hence the main trade-off: less bulk, but also slightly less warmth.
Ribbed fleece has a textured inner surface. Air channels remain between the ribs, so during active movement the fabric overheats less and releases moisture better. This option suits those who walk a lot with gear.
How to wear it and not get the size wrong
Most such UBACS shirts have a fitted cut: the shirt sits snugly against the body and does not gather in folds under a plate carrier. Because of this, don't take a larger size "just in case": extra fabric will bunch up under the armor and start to chafe. If you plan to wear thermal underwear beneath, check the size chart on the specific model's page.
A winter UBACS is an insulating layer, not outerwear. In cool weather it is worn on its own or under a chest rig, and when it gets colder, under a jacket or a field coat. A straight-cut fleece sweater with a high collar and pockets is something else: it is more often worn on top, and under a plate carrier it won't replace a UBACS. Look for other seasonal models among all tactical shirts and UBACS.
Frequently asked questions
Will a winter UBACS replace a jacket?
No, it works as a warm layer under outerwear or armor. On its own it is worn only in cool weather without strong wind or precipitation. When it gets cold, you need a jacket or field coat on top.
Can you wear a fleece UBACS without body armor?
Yes, in cool weather it works as a standalone shirt. The ripstop sleeves will protect against scratches in the field. But a napped torso without an outer layer quickly collects dust and burrs.
What does the price of a fleece UBACS depend on?
Prices here range from 750 to 1 310 UAH. The cost is affected by the type of fleece, the sleeve fabric and details such as pockets or a two-tone cut. Compare specific models by these features, not by the manufacturer's name.
