Multicam tactical vest: warmth for your core in field camouflage

An insulated sleeveless vest in Multicam is for those who spend a lot of time out in the open: on duty, at the training ground, hunting or hiking. It keeps your back and chest warm without restricting your arms, so it is comfortable to work in, carry a weapon or wear a backpack. Prices range from 1 080 to 1 480 UAH, and the difference between models comes down mainly to the insulation and fabric.

Where Multicam works and where it doesn't

Multicam is designed for mixed terrain: dry grass, soil, bushes, forest in the off-season. That is why a Multicam military vest feels best in autumn and spring, when the surroundings are full of brown and greenish tones. On snow or in the city, the camouflage stands out instead, so for everyday wear it is better to look at other tactical vests — olive, coyote or black ones.

Pair the vest with solid olive or coyote, or with items in the same Multicam: mixing it with pixel camo is not a good idea, as the patterns clash. The camouflage hides dust and stains well, but to keep the pattern from fading, wash the vest on a delicate cycle without bleach and dry it away from radiators.

Down, synthetic insulation or fleece: what to choose

Eco-down, as in the Raptor 5.0, is light and compresses well, so this kind of vest is convenient to wear as a standalone layer or under a jacket in autumn and spring. The K.S.Pro with thin down and ripstop is an option for spring, when you only need a little warmth. Synthetic insulation, on the other hand, is less afraid of moisture: the G1 Nord Face vest has 200 synthetic insulation, while the ripstop model with a fleece lining has 300 synthetic insulation, so it is thicker and warmer.

If you work in wet weather or often sweat under load, synthetic insulation will be more practical. If you value low weight and compactness, go for a down model.

How to choose the size

Some models have a letter size chart from M to 3XL, others a numeric one from 42 to 60. Decide in advance how you will wear the vest: over a fleece or sweater it should fit loosely, while under a jacket it should fit more snugly so it doesn't bunch up. Check the size against the chart on the specific model's page.

Frequently asked questions

Will such a vest protect against rain?

Against drizzle and wet snow — yes, but against a downpour — no. Ripstop and water-repellent fabrics shed droplets, but seams and zippers let water through, so in heavy rain you need a jacket on top.

Can a Multicam vest be worn in winter?

Yes, but as an insulating layer under a winter jacket. Thinner down models, which do not restrict movement under outerwear, are better suited for this.
