Carinthia winter pants: which model to choose

The Austrian brand Carinthia makes insulated clothing for people who work in the cold for long hours: soldiers, hunters and winter hikers. All of its winter pants are insulated with synthetic G-Loft, so the difference between the models is not the type of insulation but the construction: insulation thickness, outer fabric and membrane. These also determine the price, from 7 020 to 19 060 UAH, and the conditions each model suits best.

Carinthia LIG 4.0 pants are the lightest: they keep you warm without extra bulk and take up little space in a backpack when compressed. Carinthia HIG 4.0 pants have a windproof outer, so they hold heat better in open terrain. Carinthia MIG 4.0 in the SOF version is the most protected model: the membrane keeps moisture out, and the Cordura on the knees and inner legs withstands abrasion. The manufacturer rates HIG 4.0 SOF down to -20 °C and MIG 4.0 SOF down to -30 °C, but this is a guideline for layered clothing, not a guarantee: standing still, you will get cold sooner.

Suspenders, zippers and fit

MIG 4.0 is a pair of suspender pants with a loose cut that fits over thermal underwear. Two-way YKK zippers along the full length of the leg let you put them on without taking off your boots. If suspenders matter to you, compare these models with other winter pants with suspenders. Sizes range from S to 2XL; try the pants on with the layer you will wear under them.

Colors: olive, coyote, gray, black and multicam. MIG 4.0 in multicam is easy to match with field uniforms, and you can find other options among multicam winter pants.
