Level 7 Winter Pants — Insulated Outer Layer
Level 7 Pants: What This Layer Is and Who Needs It
Level 7 pants are not just warm trousers but an insulated outer layer for severe cold. They are pulled on over clothing you are already wearing when you stop moving: at a guard post, in an ambush, during a long halt or on a hunt. That is why these pants are bulky and cut loose, and they keep you warm thanks to a thick layer of insulation. Prices range from 1 320 to 4 770 UAH, depending on origin and insulation.
Army Level 7 or Tactical Pants in the Same Style
The name comes from multi-layer army systems, where the seventh level is the warmest. Genuine army items are the US Army's ECWCS Gen III, the outer layer of a seven-level system for extreme cold, and the British Army's PCS Softie. If army origin matters to you, look for these names.
The remaining models are tactical pants made on the same principle. They do not copy the army cut to the letter, but they are often more practical in the details: more pockets, an adjustable waist and side zippers. For service or hunting they are a full replacement, just without army markings.
Eco-Down, Hollofiber or Softie Premier
Eco-down, as in the Call Dragon model, is light and compresses well, so the pants are easy to carry in a backpack until you stop. In this model the outer fabric is waterproof and windproof, and full-length rubberized side zippers let you put the pants on without taking your boots off. Hollofiber retains warmth even after getting damp and dries easily. The Finetex fabric version handles wet weather better. Softie Premier in the British PCS is quilted insulation under a synthetic matte fabric. It does not clump and keeps you warm without extra layers underneath.
No insulation gives a guaranteed temperature limit: a lot depends on what you wear underneath, on the wind and on how long you stand still.
What to Wear Underneath and How to Adjust the Fit
Under Level 7, people usually wear regular field pants or fleece-insulated pants: they are enough while you are moving, and when you stop you add a warm layer on top. Adjust the waist, whether it has drawstrings, elastic or a cord, once you are wearing this whole set. If the cold gets to your lower back, consider pants with suspenders as a base layer. After use, dry Level 7 pants spread out, away from radiators: synthetic insulation loses loft from heat. Other winter options can be found among all winter and insulated pants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do British Level 7 pants differ from American ECWCS?
The difference is in the insulation and construction. PCS Softie has quilted Softie Premier insulation, an elasticated waist with a button and drawstring, and two side pockets. ECWCS Gen III is the outer layer of the American system, designed for extreme cold. Choose based on which fit and features suit you better.
