Caiman: Tactical Pants, UBACS and Field Uniforms
Caiman (also spelled Kayman) makes field clothing for duty and active outings: ripstop and twill tactical pants, UBACS shirts, light bombers and shorts. The cut is utilitarian with nothing superfluous, and the focus is on the spots that wear out first: the knees, the seat and the seams.
Which Caiman Pants to Choose
The basic Caiman tactical pants are made of ripstop (60% cotton, 40% polyester). They have cargo pockets on the thighs with hook-and-loop flaps, slash side pockets, an elastic insert in the waistband, darted knees and hook-and-loop hem tabs to adjust the leg width over boots. Stress points are bar-tacked. This model is meant for spring and autumn, worn on duty, long shifts and training.
The Caiman 2.0 belongs to the twill line, while the 5.0 has an elastic waistband that stretches to fit. The dark grey pants have double fabric on the knees and seat and YKK hardware. For hot weather there are lightweight summer pants, the Hetman, with reinforced knees and ventilation channels, or knee-length ripstop tactical shorts. There are also versions for the DSNS (State Emergency Service) and the National Guard.
UBACS, Suits and Military Uniforms
If you need a military uniform as one set, Caiman offers a UBACS shirt with pants in a matching color. The UBACS has a fitted cut for wear under body armor, a CoolMax torso that wicks moisture, ripstop sleeves, a half zip and hook-and-loop cuffs. In the 2.0 version the pants have knee pad pockets. The suit with an uninsulated jacket is worn in spring and autumn with a fleece or thermal underwear underneath. The light ripstop bomber has a detachable peaked hood, zip pockets and hook-and-loop panels for patches.
Getting the Size Right
Caiman sizes are marked with letters from S to XXXL, and some models also use waist/length pairs such as 32/34. Check both measurements: pants with an elastic waistband will sit right at the waist, and the length is easy to adjust with the hem tabs if you tuck the legs into boots.
