This is clothing for training, hunting, fishing, hiking and everyday wear in transitional seasons and summer, when it helps to have a jacket and pants in the same shade that work well together.
Fleece-Lined or Uninsulated Softshell
Vanguard softshell suits come in two types. The fleece-lined suit has a lined jacket, a hood that rolls away three ways, underarm vents and ten pockets on the pants: wear it in cool, windy weather and add thermal underwear in frost. The lightweight suit without insulation is meant for warmer days when you only need protection from wind and drizzle.
Softshell sheds drizzle and wet snow, but it is not a rain jacket: in a long downpour the seams will eventually let water through. Wash the suit on a gentle cycle without fabric softener so the fabric keeps its water repellency.
Why Take a Ready-Made Kit
Pieces from different makers often differ in their shade of Coyote or Olive. The kits add thermal underwear, a UBACS shirt or boots with quick laces to the softshell suit in the same color, so you can put together gear for training in one go. When comparing these sets with other tactical suits, look at what is inside: thermal underwear covers the base layer, and a UBACS is comfortable under body armor when a jacket is too much.

Dewspo, a light polyester with a water-repellent finish, protects against wind and light rain. It is used for summer pants with an elastic waist and cargo pockets on the thighs, as well as a light jacket with an adjustable hood, hook-and-loop cuffs and four pockets. Both weigh very little, so they are easy to keep in a backpack in case of wind or a short shower.
