Tactical Multicam Jacket: How to Choose for Your Conditions

Multicam was designed as a camouflage that works in different environments: in forests, in open fields, among dry grass and on bare ground. That is why a military jacket in this pattern is a familiar choice for service, training grounds, hunting and trips where the terrain changes several times a day. In the off-season this is especially noticeable: in spring and autumn nature itself becomes mottled, green and brown, and Multicam blends into it better than solid colors. Below is what is worth knowing about this particular camouflage when you choose a jacket for spring or autumn.

Where Multicam Conceals and Where It Stands Out

The strength of Multicam is that it blends olive, green, brown and beige patches. That is why it is not tied to a single background and suits young greenery, withered grass and plowed fields alike. For a spring and autumn jacket this is the main argument: in April and October the landscape is exactly that mixed. On the other hand, on snow the pattern turns into a dark spot, and in dense coniferous forest it loses to darker camouflages.

In the city Multicam is conspicuous, and outside of service it draws attention. If you need the jacket mainly for everyday wear rather than for the field, look at other colors among all spring and autumn jackets: olive, coyote or black behave more calmly in the city. If you serve or regularly go on outings, Multicam on a jacket covers both scenarios at once.

How to Put Together a Set and Get the Shade Right

Multicam is printed by different manufacturers, and their shades are not identical: in one the pattern is greener, in another it is lighter and closer to sand. If you plan to wear the jacket with pants in the same camouflage, compare them in person or buy a set from one manufacturer. Otherwise, in photos and in real life, two different colors will be visible. A simpler way is solid-color pants in olive, coyote or black: they pair with a camouflage top without any problems.

The second thing to look at is the patch areas. Many models, such as those from 5.11 or Archon 2.0, have Velcro panels on the chest and sleeves for patches, a flag and a blood type tag. For service this is almost mandatory. For hunting and hiking you can take a simpler model without Velcro, which looks neater. Also assess whether a plate carrier or chest rig will cover the chest pockets: in that case it is more important to have sleeve pockets, as on the Caiman bomber or the M-65 jacket.

How to Preserve the Pattern After Washing and Sun

Camouflage fades gradually: the patches lose contrast, the pattern becomes pale and conceals worse. To prevent this, wash the jacket inside out, in warm rather than hot water, and without bleach or products with optical brighteners. Dry it in the shade: direct sun bleaches the print faster than washing does.

Before washing, fasten all the Velcro so it does not snag on the fabric and pill it. Minor dirt is almost invisible on Multicam, so it is often enough to brush the jacket off after an outing rather than wash it every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does MTP differ from Multicam?

MTP is a British army camouflage created on the basis of Multicam, so they look very similar. The pattern of the patches and slightly the shade differ. A British smock in MTP can safely be worn with Multicam items: the difference is almost unnoticeable at a distance.

Can you wear Multicam every day in the city?

You can, but the jacket will be conspicuous and will clearly read as military. If that does not bother you, practical models such as a bomber or a short hooded jacket serve well in the city too. For a neutral look it is better to choose a solid color.

How much does a Multicam spring and autumn jacket cost?

Prices range from 1 080 to 13 100 UAH. Cheaper models are usually uninsulated, with a simple set of pockets. More expensive ones have a fleece lining, insulation or a membrane and more thoughtful details for gear.
