Tactical fleece-lined jacket: light warmth for the in-between seasons

A jacket with a fleece lining is for those who find a windbreaker no longer enough, but a multi-layer insulation is too much. Fleece warms gently, doesn't add much bulk and performs well on the move, so this kind of jacket is chosen for service, trips, the training range and everyday wear in autumn and spring. Prices for tactical fleece-lined jackets range from 1 540 to 5 030 UAH, and the difference mostly comes down to the outer material, the hardware and details such as reinforcements and flaps.

What fleece does and where exactly it should be

A fleece lining keeps you warm even when it has gotten a little damp from sweat, dries quickly and lets vapor escape. That's why you feel less overheated in it on the move than under dense synthetic insulation. The flip side is that fleece on its own lets wind through, so only the outer fabric protects you from the wind. If the outer layer is thin, you'll need to add a layer underneath in strong wind.

Before buying, check exactly where the fleece is located. In some models it lines the entire body and sleeves, in others only the hood and collar. For example, the nylon Yinren 4.0 has a fleece-lined hood, and the Call Dragon parka has a green fleece lining inside the hood and collar. Such jackets are lighter and thinner, but they mainly warm the head and neck, while you insulate the torso with the clothing underneath.

Softshell, ripstop or nylon over fleece

A softshell jacket with fleece lining is the most versatile option: the fabric stretches, doesn't rustle, and holds off wind and light drizzle. It is chosen for movement and everyday wear, and there are options in the "Predator" camouflage for the National Guard of Ukraine and blue ones for the State Emergency Service, with a hook-and-loop patch for a chevron on the back. Ripstop is rougher and more tear-resistant, so it stands up better to brush and work with equipment; the pixel v2 model, for example, is made without a hood, with a stand-up collar — convenient if you wear a helmet.

Smooth, dense nylon, like on the Yinren 4.0, is lightweight, moisture-resistant and picks up less dirt. For the city, the Pentagon Panthiras is a good fit: the YKK zipper is covered by a wind flap, the cuffs have hook-and-loop closures, and the solid black doesn't look military. If you spend a lot of time standing in one place, look at a parka — it is longer and covers the hips, while a short jacket is more convenient with a chest rig.

Size and fleece care

Fleece takes up space inside, so try the jacket on with what you will actually wear under it. Sizes come in both letter (from XS to 4XL) and numeric (from 42 to 64) formats, so check the size chart of the specific model. A men's straight-cut fleece-lined jacket usually has some extra room in the shoulders, and women are better off trying unisex models one size smaller.

Wash the jacket inside out, on a delicate cycle in cool water and without fabric softener: it flattens the pile and the fleece warms less well. Dry it laid flat, away from radiators and direct heat — synthetic pile hardens and mats from high temperatures. After the season, clean the lining of hair and debris with a brush, and it will stay soft longer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a fleece lining keep you warm if the jacket gets wet?

Yes, partially. Fleece barely absorbs water and retains warmth even when damp. But none of these jackets will save you from a downpour, so for prolonged rain, wear a rain jacket over it.

Are these men's jackets, or will they suit women too?

Most have a men's or unisex cut, like the Yinren 4.0. These models suit women if they choose a smaller size and check the sleeve length.

What should you wear under a mid-season fleece-lined jacket?

A T-shirt or thermal underwear is usually enough. In cool weather, add a thin sweater — more layers under fleece are rarely needed. If you need a different type of insulation, browse all mid-season jackets.
