Helikon Pants: Which Model to Choose for Your Needs

Poland's Helikon-Tex makes pants for field duty as well as for everyday wear in the city. That is why, within a single brand, the models differ noticeably in fabric, cut and feature set. Before choosing a size, decide where exactly you will wear them. That determines whether you need knee pad pockets or, on the contrary, a low-key look without a "military" accent.

How Pilgrim, Greyman, Urban Tactical and MCDU Differ

ModelFabricBest for
PilgrimDuraCanvasRange, field trips, everyday wear with a belt
GreymanDuraCanvasCity, when you need a civilian look
Urban Tactical (UTP)PolyCotton CanvasAll-round wear, city and outdoors
MCDUDyNyCo RipstopWork on your knees, knee pad pockets

Pilgrim pants have a straight, relaxed cut, articulated knees and a raised waistband with belt loops for a tactical belt. These are work pants that pair well with a fleece or softshell on top. Greyman belongs to the Urban Line. The fabric is the same, but the design is more understated, so in the city they don't draw attention. UTP is the brand's classic, made of sturdy polycotton canvas. If you have to spend a lot of time kneeling, go for MCDU: the inserts stay in place in the built-in pockets.

Size and Color: What to Consider

Helikon pants are sized using the W/L system: waist from W28 to W42 and length L32 or L34. DuraCanvas fabric contains 2% elastane, so it stretches slightly when you squat. However, it won't "fix" the fit at the waist, so choose your waist size precisely. Choose length L34 if you are tall or wear the pants over high boots.

Olive and coyote are field colors that look equally fitting in the city. Pilgrim is also available in black. This option suits city duty and those who want to combine the pants with civilian clothing. For other brands and color options, see the general category tactical pants.
