The Archon 5.0 tactical jacket is designed for extended time outdoors in cold weather where conditions change rapidly: wind, wet snow, freezing temperatures. This winter jacket features three types of insulation in one construction: G-LOFT, COCONA 37.5 synthetic insulation and Omni-Heat insert on the upper back. The volume remains moderate because the fibers trap warm air close to the body.
The face fabric is a two-layer ripstop laminate that blocks wind and repels moisture. To the touch it is soft and produces minimal noise, which matters when silence is needed. G-LOFT insulation does not absorb water, so the jacket retains heat even in damp conditions. After compression in a backpack, it quickly expands and returns to shape.
The integrated Hood/Harness 3 system with sealed seams keeps the hood in place even in strong wind. The hood moves with your head, and the fit can be adjusted so it doesn't obstruct your view. If you get too warm, open the pit zippers: they unfasten completely with one motion and don't snag on fabric.
The jacket has a classic cut with a center zipper, side pockets and long sleeves. In severe cold, thermal underwear and a fleece jacket work well underneath. In moderate cold, a long-sleeve shirt or light sweatshirt is sufficient. Thanks to its light weight and compressibility, it's convenient to carry in a backpack as a spare.
Most winter jackets rely on one type of filler. This one combines G-LOFT, synthetic insulation and Omni-Heat, plus pit zippers for releasing excess heat. Each of these details works in practice: heat is retained, moisture is repelled, and overheating while moving can be avoided.
