Olive fleece: a warm jacket for field uniforms

Olive fleece is the most versatile option for anyone who wears a field uniform or simply wants a understated warm jacket without camouflage. Solid olive pairs easily with Multicam, pixel, coyote and khaki, so one fleece covers several outfits at once. These jackets are used as an insulating layer under a jacket or body armor, for hunting, fishing and hiking, while lighter models are worn every day. Prices range from 810 to 5 500 UAH, depending on the material, density and details.

What shades of olive there are and what to pair them with

"Olive" means different shades from different manufacturers. Pentagon, for example, releases the same model in Camo Green, Adaptive Green and RAL 7013; there is also dark olive with a noticeably deeper tone, as well as light olive, closer to khaki. So if you are choosing a fleece to match pants or a jacket you already own, compare the shade in the photo and the color name, not just the word "olive".

Two-tone models stand apart: olive with black, with pixel or with Multicam, usually with inserts on the shoulders and sleeves. They look more interesting but are more tightly tied to a specific uniform. A solid-color jacket is more flexible: it works equally well with Ukrainian Armed Forces pixel and with civilian jeans. If you mostly work in dry steppe or in late autumn, when the greenery is gone, take a look at coyote fleece jackets, and for a camouflage outfit — Multicam fleece jackets.

Which density and type of fleece to choose

Olive jackets range from light 180 g/m² (like the Pentagon Elk) to dense 380 g/m², with intermediate 240, 280, 300 and 320 g/m². The principle is simple: thin fleece is a mid-layer under a jacket, it does not get in the way under body armor and does not overheat when you move; dense fleece can be worn as a standalone outer layer in cool weather, but under gear it is bulkier and heavier. For example, the Helikon-Tex Patriot made of 380 g/m² fleece is a full warm jacket, not an underlayer.

If you move a lot — marches, hauling loads — waffle fleece is a better fit: its grid structure wicks moisture well and dries quickly. For minimal bulk under a uniform there are microfleece jackets. Models with Polartec High Loft are lighter at the same warmth, while hybrids with Soft Shell and fleece with a membrane block wind better than regular fleece.

Uniform details and sizing

For service use, pay attention to Velcro panels on the sleeves and chest for patches and ID patches, sleeve pockets, and shoulder and elbow reinforcements made of rain-resistant fabric or nylon: these are the spots that wear through first from backpack straps and belts. A stand-up collar is more comfortable under a helmet and body armor, a hood is for camp and rest.

Sizes are marked with both letters and numbers, and for some models by the R fit grid, where, for instance, M/R actually corresponds to size 50 and L/R to 52/54. Take a size with extra room for thermal underwear if the fleece will go under a jacket or body armor, and do not buy "to grow into" if you will wear it as an outer layer. It is best to wash fleece inside out on a delicate cycle without fabric softener — that way it pills less over time and the olive does not fade in patches.

Frequently asked questions

Is olive fleece suitable for the Ukrainian Armed Forces?

Yes, solid olive is one of the most common colors for an insulating layer under a field uniform. It does not clash with either pixel or Multicam. It is best to check the specific clothing color requirements with your own unit.

How does dark olive differ from regular olive?

It is a deeper shade, closer to brownish green. It is less noticeable in shade and against a dark background and suits dark outfits better, while regular olive is closer to classic army green.

Can an olive fleece jacket be worn as outerwear?

It can, if it is a dense 300–380 g/m² model or a hybrid with windproof inserts. Thin fleece lets the wind through, so it is better combined with a jacket. See other colors and types in the fleece jackets section.
