Grey fleece for the city, duty and field trips

Grey fleece is the choice for people who need a tactical sweater beyond the field. It should look appropriate in the city, on shift or under a civilian jacket. A grey fleece jacket doesn't shout military style the way camouflage does, yet it stays functional. It has a high collar, cuffs, zippered pockets and, in some models, reinforcement on the shoulders and elbows. Prices range from 970 to 4 210 UAH, depending on density, fleece type and construction.

Where grey is appropriate and where it isn't

Grey is the classic color of urban tactical lines. It is no coincidence that Helikon-Tex places its Alpha Tactical in the Urban Line. On the street, in the office, behind the wheel or at training, such a jacket looks like ordinary quality clothing, which is why it is happily worn every day. Grey also suits police and security work where the uniform is not camouflage. There is even a model with ripstop inserts on the shoulders made specifically for such tasks.

For field conditions where concealment is needed, however, grey loses to olive or camouflage: against greenery and soil it stands out. If the jacket will be the outer layer in positions, look at other colors among fleece jackets. Under a jacket or body armor, grey fleece works without any restrictions. For the city you can also consider a blue fleece — it looks even more civilian.

Density determines where the jacket will work. The Pentagon Elk at 180 g/m² is lightweight: it is convenient to wear under a jacket or on a cool day. The Pentagon Hercules 2.0 at 300 g/m² already keeps you warm as a standalone layer and has reinforced shoulders and elbows. The Helikon-Tex Alpha Tactical with Light Grid Fleece is 310 g/m², but thanks to its grid structure it releases excess heat and moisture. Such grid fleece jackets are good for active movement.

How to care for grey fleece

Dust and lint show less on grey than on black, but grease and soil stains are more noticeable. So it is better to treat them right away rather than waiting for the wash. Wash fleece on a delicate cycle in warm water, turned inside out with the zippers closed. This reduces pilling. Do not use bleach or a hot-air dryer: polyester clumps from it, and light shades turn yellow. Dry the jacket laid flat, away from a radiator.
