Helikon fleece: Helikon-Tex fleece jackets and hoodies
Helikon fleece: how to choose a model for your needs
The Polish brand Helikon-Tex makes fleece for military personnel, hunters and anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors. A Helikon-Tex fleece jacket works as a mid layer under a jacket or as a standalone top in cool weather. The models differ in fabric weight, reinforcements and cut, so first decide where and how you will wear it, and only then choose the color. Prices for Helikon fleece jackets range from 2 260 to 5 500 UAH. If the brand is not essential for you, compare with other fleece jackets.
How Patriot, Alpha Tactical and Classic Army differ
Helikon Patriot is the heaviest line: classic 380 g/m² fleece, and the 390 g/m² version is even denser. The hood on the Patriot is not detachable, the sleeves have two ID panels for patches, the elbows are reinforced, the cuffs adjust with hook-and-loop closures, and the zipper is YKK. This jacket is worth choosing for cold weather when you stand or sit more than you move, and warmth matters more than weight. Patriot Mk2 Hybrid is an updated version with 320 g/m² fleece. It has reinforced shoulders, elbows and forearms, so it is lighter and handles friction from backpack straps or a plate carrier better.
Helikon Alpha Tactical from the Urban Line is made of Light Grid Fleece with a weight of 310 g/m² — a grid fleece with a honeycomb pattern. This structure releases excess heat and moisture, so the jacket performs well on the move: on a march, under load, on the road. Classic Army is designed as a warming mid layer. It retains heat, protects against wind and light rain, has nylon reinforcements on the shoulders and elbows, and four pockets of different sizes.
| Model | Fleece | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Patriot | classic, 380–390 g/m² | cold weather and static work |
| Patriot Mk2 Hybrid | 320 g/m², reinforced panels | under a backpack and body armor |
| Alpha Tactical | honeycomb grid, 310 g/m² | active movement |
| Classic Army | classic, nylon reinforcements | everyday mid layer |
Jacket or hoodie: which works better under gear
Besides fleece jackets, Helikon-Tex makes the Urban Tactical Hoodie with a zipper, as well as the lightweight Urban Tactical Hoodie Lite and Lite Kangaroo with a kangaroo pocket. These are more of an urban option: convenient for everyday wear, trips or the training range in warmer seasons. Under body armor and a chest rig, a full-zip jacket with reinforced shoulders works better, for example Patriot Mk2 Hybrid or Classic Army. It does not bunch up under the straps, and when it gets hot, it is easy to unzip.
Decide on the hood separately. If you often stand in the wind without a hat, look at fleece jackets with a hood. If the fleece will go under a jacket with its own hood, a stand-up collar with no extra fabric around the neck is more convenient.
Color and size
Helikon fleece comes in black, gray, blue, as well as olive and coyote. For field tasks, it makes more sense to choose an olive fleece or a coyote-colored jacket, since they match most field uniforms. Black fleece jackets, gray and blue ones are more appropriate in the city, for police duty or as everyday wear.
Sizes range from XS to 3XL. For a mid layer, take your usual size: fleece should fit close to the body, because then it retains heat better. Go up one size only if you plan to wear thermal underwear and a thin sweater under the jacket.
Frequently asked questions
Which Helikon fleece is the warmest?
The warmest is Helikon Patriot with a weight of 380 or 390 g/m². It is designed for cold weather and work without active movement. For a march or intense exertion, it is better to choose Alpha Tactical: in dense fleece you will sweat faster.
How does Patriot Mk2 Hybrid differ from the regular Patriot?
Mk2 Hybrid is lighter and more wear-resistant in high-friction areas. Its fleece is thinner, 320 g/m², but the shoulders, elbows and forearms are reinforced with panels. That is why it is more comfortable under a backpack and body armor, while the classic Patriot is warmer.
How to wash a Helikon-Tex fleece jacket?
Machine wash on a delicate cycle at a low temperature, turning the jacket inside out and fastening the zippers. Do not add fabric softener, because it mats the pile and reduces heat retention. Dry the jacket laid flat, away from radiators and direct sunlight.
