M-Tac Fleece Jacket: Which Model to Choose

M-Tac is a Ukrainian manufacturer that makes fleece tops for service, hunting and hiking. Both of the brand's models are second generation (Gen.II), but they work differently. Windblock Division has a windproof membrane and a hood, while Alpha Microfleece is a dense reinforced fleece without a hood. Prices range from 2 620 to 2 970 UAH, and the choice comes down to one question: will you wear the fleece as an outer layer or as a layer under a jacket?

Windblock vs Alpha: What's the Difference

Windblock Division Gen.II is made from 220 g/m² Polar Fleece with a windproof membrane and a water-repellent finish. The fleece is thinner but wind does not get through it, so this jacket is worn as an outer layer in windy, cool weather. In Gen.II the hood holds in place better, and extra ventilation helps prevent overheating on the move. Seven pockets, including two chest pockets with hook-and-loop closures, hold small items without the need for pouches.

Alpha Microfleece Gen.II is made from 420 g/m² reinforced fleece, 100% polyester. The shoulders, elbows, upper back and collar are reinforced with Oxford 300 PU nylon, so the top does not wear through under backpack straps. There is no membrane here; instead, the inside has a laminated polyester mesh lining for ventilation. Under the ECWCS system it is the third layer: in the off-season the top is worn on its own, and in frost it goes under an outer jacket.

Size and Pairing with Your Uniform

Sizes range from XS to XXXL. If you are buying the Alpha as an insulating layer, try it on with the base layer or T-shirt you will wear underneath. Also check that your outer jacket fits comfortably over it. The Windblock has an elastic waistband and an ergonomic cut, so buying it a size up is not advisable: an oversized jacket lets wind in from below and the benefit of the membrane is lost.

Choose the color to match the rest of your kit. For Ukrainian Armed Forces field uniform, people most often take an olive fleece jacket or coyote. For the city and police uniform, black fleece tops are more convenient. If you need a different cut or brand, browse all fleece tops.
