Carinthia: Winter Tactical Clothing and G-Loft Sleeping Bags
Carinthia is an Austrian maker of insulated clothing and sleeping bags, produced for armed forces and for anyone who spends long hours in the cold. At the core of the brand is its own synthetic G-Loft insulation: structured much like down, yet unbothered by moisture and quick to regain loft after compression. That is why these jackets, pants and sleeping bags go on winter duty, hunting trips and hikes where down would get damp.
What LIG, MIG, HIG and ECIG Mean
The abbreviations in the names of Carinthia winter jackets tell you how warm a piece is. LIG 4.0 is the lightest: a thin layer of G-Loft and low weight, worn in cool weather or as a mid layer. MIG 4.0 has denser insulation and a Gore Windstopper shell, while HIG 4.0 and ECIG 4.0 are made for hard frost and long hours in position. There are SOF versions too, and the Multicam Alpine winter camo with IRR coating is meant for snow.
A jacket pairs well with pants from the same series. The MIG 4.0 Carinthia insulated pants have suspenders, CORDURA reinforcement on the knees and inner legs, and full-length two-way YKK zips, so you can pull them on without taking your boots off. The G-Loft Ultra Shirt 2.0 shirt jacket works as an insulating layer under a membrane shell, the light TLG with Techno Stretch panels suits the shoulder season, and the ISG PRO has side zips for holster access.
Choosing a Carinthia Sleeping Bag
Carinthia sleeping bags use a mummy shape that tapers toward the feet, leaving less air inside to warm up. The Defence 4 and Defence 6 are filled with G-Loft and stay warm even in a damp tent; the Defence 6 and Sovsäck 2000B are built for harder frost. The XP Down 1000 is down-filled, so it is lighter and packs smaller but needs protection from moisture. The summer bag made for the Belgian army suits warm months and chilly nights.
Wear and Care
Choose your size with layers in mind: under winter jackets and pants you usually wear thermal underwear, and in hard frost a fleece as well. A compression sack, where one is included, is handy for travel, but store insulated items uncompressed so the G-Loft keeps its loft. Wash them on a gentle cycle without fabric softener and dry them laid out flat, away from radiators.
